Flying Lizard Welcomes Hedlund for Competition at Home Track
As Flying Lizard Motorsports prepares for the final three race assault for the Pirelli World Challenge GT championship title, the California based team has added racer Mike Hedlund to the roster for back-to-back race weekends at Sonoma Raceway. With an extensive background in GT racing, Hedlund is no stranger to the 2.52 mile track, finishing fourth overall with Scuderia Corsa in the 2014 Pirelli World Challenge event.
Starting with the Pirelli Driver Cup race weekend, Hedlund and his Porsche GT3 Cup car will race alongside Thomas Meyerhoffer and his Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. In his first weekend of competition in May, Meyerhoffer earned two top five finishes in his class, including one third place podium finish.
Following the Pirelli Driver Cup weekend, Hedlund will make his debut in the Pirelli World Challenge’s GT Cup class, as the second Porsche entry for the team at their home track. Andy Wilzoch and his Flying Lizard liveried Porsche 911 GT3 R will grace the track once again in the GTA class, at the final three Pirelli World Challenge races at Sonoma Raceway and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The two Porsches will join the three McLarens 650S GT3 cars Flying Lizard has entered with K-PAX Racing.
“I can’t wait to return to the Pirelli World Challenge at Sonoma Raceway,” said Hedlund. “While it will be my first time officially driving under the Flying Lizard banner, I’ve known most of the people on the team for years as we’re based out of the same area. It’ll also be my first time entering the Porsche 911 GT Cup class after competing in the GT class the last few seasons, but I’ve always kept an eye on them as my background is in Porsche Cup cars. Racing near home and sharing the event with family and friends is always a highlight of my season and I hope we’ll have a strong and competitive weekend for the entire team.”
