Flying Lizard Lamborghinis Head to VIR for Super Trofeo Battle

DANVILLE, Vir., (August 23, 2023) – The second half of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America sports car racing series begins this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway for Rounds Seven and Eight of the 12-round championship. Flying Lizard Motorsports will be contesting its four full-season entries in this weekend’s activities, hungry for another win in what has been a successful 2023 season to date.

“We are coming off a great race weekend at Road America and looking forward to VIR,” said Program Manager Darren Law. “We had the opportunity to test at VIR a couple of weeks ago, and the team and drivers are very comfortable here. Although this is a challenging track, it is one of the best in the US and we are ready to go.”

Flying Lizard first competed at Paul Newman’s “Heaven on Earth” in 2012, when the American Le Mans Series brought competitors to the now fan-favorite course. With drivers Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long, the team celebrated a podium finish with the No. 45 Porsche 997 GT3-RSR. This weekend, the team returns with a quartet of four Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2s.

Tom Tait and Slade Stewart each had strong showings at VIRginia International Raceway in 2022, with a pair of top-five finishes between them and a second-place finish for Stewart. This year, the Lizards have double the entries, which in total have earned the team two pole positions, five podiums, one win, and 10 top-five results so far this season.

The single-make series runs in support of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, with just two more events remaining in the United States before the Super Trofeo series joins up with its European counterparts for the World Finals at the Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi in Italy.

In the previous doubleheader at Road America earlier this month, Chris Bellomo and Johannes van Overbeek became the first team pairing of the Lizard umbrella to score a return visit to the podium coming in second place in the Pro/Am class in round five. In round six, Tom Tait and the No. 64 entry celebrated a long-awaited podium in a chaotic ending to the final race of the season, giving the Am-class racer a strong wave of momentum for the final three events.

Just in time for the race weekend, the team has proudly launched a new addition to the merchandise store: an exclusive cartoon pink Lamborghini t-shirt featuring the fan-favorite unicorn “Sparklefarts,” the mascot of the pink Unicorn No. 14 car driven this year by Slade Stewart and Andy Lee. Fans can shop the broad Lizard selection of merchandise at flyinglizardstore.com.
