Flying Lizard Bulls Charge into Virginia Super Trofeo Race Weekend

ALTON, Vir., (August 24, 2022) – The final United States-based round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America season has arrived and Flying Lizard Motorsports will contend in the next round with a pair of Lamborghinis in the doubleheader at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR). Before the 2022 season concludes in Portugal in November, the Danville, Virginia track will host the final North American event of the year on August 27 and 28.
“VIR is always one of my favorite tracks to compete at in the United States,” said Program Manager Darren Law. “It is great for the fans and the high speed, technical nature of the track makes it both challenging and fun. We have always had success here and with the additional testing we did earlier this month we feel good about the upcoming weekend. Slade and Tom have both done an amazing job this year and it has shown on the track. We are looking forward to closing out the US portion of the series at VIR in preparation for the last round at the World Finals later this year.”
After the attrition-filled two rounds at Road America, drivers Slade Stewart and Tom Tait enter the Virginia weekend with a renewed sense of vigor, eager to accumulate strong results before the year’s end. For Tait, an incident in qualifying took the No. 64 entry out of contention for the weekend’s two races, though the Am class driver stayed on site to cheer on Stewart. The No. 14 pink unicorn Lamborghini suffered a blown tire while leading race one, then was taken out on the pace lap in race two by another competitor.
In an effort to optimize the weekend ahead, the Lizards brought their Lamborghini effort to VIRginia International Raceway for a private test, allowing both drivers to get comfortable and up to speed on the 3.27-mile, 17-turn road course. Dubbed “America’s Motorsport Resort,” VIRginia International Raceway is a top-notch circuit for drivers and fans alike. Established in 1957, VIR’s facility remains one that holds tight to its racing roots while finding ways to modernize and improve the race experience for competitors and fans. With its fast and smooth turns, long straights, and sweeping elevation changes, VIR will keep drivers pushing to the limits as fans enjoy new spectator viewing areas across the wooded property. As Paul Newman once said, “If there is a heaven on earth, it is VIR.”
Thirty-one entries will compete this weekend in Rounds 9 and 10 of the 12-race championship. Entering the weekend, Stewart leads the LB championship point standings and will be looking to grow his gap over the competition. The field will qualify on Saturday, August 27 for race one at 9:45 AM ET, followed by race two’s qualifying session at 10:05 AM. Race one will begin that afternoon at 2:05 PM, and the weekend will conclude Sunday afternoon, August 28 with race two beginning at 11:35 PM ET. Both races will air live on imsa.tv.
The Lizards will also have special fan engagement activities planned for the weekend, to be announced later in the week on the team’s social media channels. For event information, visit imsa.com.

Slade Stewart (LB Cup)
No. 14 Lamborghini Super Trofeo
We left Road America frustrated because we didn’t get to show the pace we had in qualifying, first it was a blown tire, second it was getting retired with rear-end damage before the green flag even flew. So, I am incredibly excited to get back in the car for our final US race weekend at the Racing Estate known as VIR. Having recently tested there for the first time, I was taken aback by the beauty and technical nature that the track is and the property represents. Flying Lizard Motorsports and all of our fine crew worked tirelessly to get the cars back in order, and Tom and I are grateful for their support and teamwork in preparing us for this upcoming weekend.
Tom Tait (Am)
No. 64 Emerald Center Lamborghini Super Trofeo
On behalf of the entire Flying Lizard Motorsports Lamborghini Super Trofeo team, we are very excited to race at VIR this weekend. Our Lamborghini Newport beach, number 64 entry, is fully prepared and ready for another round of super-competitive racing in the AM class. 2022 has been a season of learning and improving finishes, working our way toward the front of the field. We will be pushing hard for a podium finish this weekend, and Slade Stewart (aka. Sparklefarts) will be fighting to further solidify his lead in the LB Cup 2022 season championship. We feel very fortunate to be supported by the fantastic, dedicated professionals at Flying Lizard Motorsports and Lamborghini Newport Beach.
